Prospective directors interested in leading productions during the 2018-2019 Curtain Players season have until Sunday November 5 to submit applications.

Veteran Player Marla Williams and Board President James F. Petsche are co-chairs of the 2018-19 season selection committee comprised of Jeanine Joseph, Brian Henry, Jane Mowder, Julie Emmert Silvius, and Drew Washburn.

Application materials are available by request by e-mailing Petsche at

Questions about the process and the theatre may be directed to that address as well.

The deadline to apply is Sunday November 5.

Please e-mail completed application materials by November 5 to the Curtain Players Season Selection Committee at or send them by post to Curtain Players Season Selection Committee, PO Box 1143, Westerville OH 43086.

After applications are reviewed, the committee will interview finalists chosen from the applicant pool, likely through November. Those applicants should be prepared to discuss their proposed scripts, providing reasons for wanting to have those scripts produced for Curtain Players volunteers and audiences. Directors are expected to be strong project managers, too, so applicants will be asked to share their working processes and to discuss their philosophies.

The Curtain Players season selection process follows a model in which director applicants propose the plays they want to direct. Curtain Players recognizes the importance of having directors engaged in projects about which they are passionate and for which they have great enthusiasm and commitment.

That said, Curtain Players must make season selections mindful of its available technical and human resources, of titles popular with audiences, and of equality and availability of roles across ages and genders.  The committee is looking for at least two comedies, classic titles of any genre, scripts suitable for general audiences that may include roles for children or teens, and a contemporary drama perhaps addressing family or social issues. The committee is not considering musicals for Season 56 or is it reviewing scripts produced by Curtain Players in the last 20 years.

Applicants are advised the 5691 Harlem Road (Galena) playhouse has certain physical constraints, such as no fly space and limited backstage areas, that influence technical and design plans for a production.

Curtain Players is looking for directors who have either prior directing experience or theatre experiences such as technical/design positions, acting, or stage management that have prepared them for directing. Directors are paid a $250 honorarium for their work with the volunteer non-profit organization.

Exact production dates are not yet set, but Curtain Players customarily stages six shows: in September; late October/early November; late November/early December; February; late March/early April; and May. Each production runs eight performances over three weekends.

Details are included in the application materials.

The committee is to make recommendations to the Curtain Players Board of Directors by January. An announcement of the 2018-19 offerings is expected in mid-winter.
