CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS… The ages listed for the characters are those actually stated in the play’s dialog, however, actors auditioning for these roles can be younger or older than the stated age.
Norman: A retired professor who uses his sharp, disarming wit to mask his fears and frustrations arising out of his failing health, fading memory and awareness of his mortality; loving and vulnerable with Ethel. (age 80 but not physically frail at all)
Ethel: A spirited, life-loving, nurturing soul and soulmate to Norman, unfazed by his barbs, saddened to watch him decline but determined that to enjoy to the fullest the time they have left together. (age 69)
Chelsea: A bright, capable, divorced woman, still hurting from her regret of not having lived up to Norman’s expectations which he, of course, engendered but which she should have let go of long ago. (age 42)
Bill Ray: A successful Los Angeles dentist who is initially unnerved by Norman but ultimately gains his respect by standing his ground. (age 45)
Billy Ray: Bill’s son who, underneath a cool/tough front is really in need and responds enthusiastically to the love and attention he receives from Ethel and Norman. (age 13)
Charlie Martin: The local mailman and childhood friend of Chelsea who has always had a crush on her. His laugh is contagious albeit used a little too often. (age 44)
REHEARSAL SCHEDULE… In general, there will be two table reads and one-on-one meetings with the director prior to rehearsals that will begin approximately six to seven weeks before opening night September 7.
