  • Irish dialect will be required and is important for these roles, but can be coached. Ages are approximate and flexible, the important thing about casting will be the ability for these characters to be in relationship with each other.

  • Maureen – (plays 40s) An unmarried woman living in Leenane, Ireland. Maureen is written to be in her 40s and takes care of Mag, her mother. Maureen is the protagonist. Must be willing to be onstage in a slip or similar lingerie for one scene. Requires broad emotional range. (Mother and daughter share a turbulent and unhealthy relationship)
  • Mags – (70s) A very difficult older woman of poor health who is cared for by Maureen, her daughter. She is not good hearted. (Mother and daughter share a turbulent and unhealthy relationship)

Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag, her manipulative aging mother, whose interference in Maureen's first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that leads inexorably towards the play's terrifying dénouement.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane enjoyed successful runs Off-Broadway, Broadway, and on London's West End. It was nominated for the Olivier award for Best Play of 1998, won the Drama Desk award, and won 4 Tony awards for its actors and director. Run time approx 2 hours, set in the 1990n's in Galway, Ireland.

Sarah Merkey has her B.A. in Theatre with a day job in the financial services industry. She enjoys acting, singing (in the shower), and volunteering as producer, artistic advisor, or stage manager for local shows. Sarah has performed with MadLab, Eclipse, and Shakespeare Underground in addition to Trevor, Present Laughter, and Marvin's Room at Curtain. She has also directed high school and community theatre - favorite shows include The Diary of Anne Frank, When Hedy Met Howie, Crimes of the Heart, and Into the Woods. Sarah's goal in directing is to give the production team the space to bring all their creativity and talent to the table, and actors the space and support they need to do their best work. She believes Curtain's motto represents the best kind of theatre: "Good stories, well told".

Where

Script review, auditions, and performances take place at:
Curtain Players Theatre
5691 Harlem Road, Galena, OH 43021

Curtain Players offers an information session for each of its productions as a help for actors seeking roles, but attendance is not required to audition. The event is an opportunity for actors to become acquainted with the community theatre organization, to discuss the play with the director, and to ask questions about the audition process, rehearsal period, and production plans. Those interested in working behind the scenes are also invited to attend.

Curtain Players conducts open auditions for its productions. Roles are not cast in advance, and, unless specified otherwise in the role's description, are open to all without regard to race or ethnicity. Casting decisions are made by the director and a casting committee comprised of a member of the theatre board, a general member of the organization, and individuals of the director's choosing.

Actors are encouraged to come to auditions familiar with the script and ready to read cuttings from the script. Every effort will be made to give actors equal chances to read. Resumes and head shots are helpful but not necessary.

Requests for an early audition for The Beauty Queen of Leenane must be made no later than November 03, 2024.

Questions related to the audition process may be directed to production@curtainplayers.org.

Rehearsals will take place most Sunday afternoons, and 3-4 evenings a week in December and January. The schedule will be disciplined, optimizing rehearsal time for each character and each element of the production.
