  • Please note that The Birds contains explicit language, situational horror, and references to the threat of sexual assault, although no sexual assault is depicted onstage. The cast will tell much of the story through in-depth rehearsal with "intention through stillness and silence" and the paralyzing fear of things that might or might not be there. The stakes are Life-or-Death..
  • No dialects, other than Standard American, will be used.

  • Diane – (famale identifying, plays 40s-50s) The narrator of the piece. Begins as the most personable and composed inhabitant of the house, but turns into the most ruthless. An author, complex, smart, generally a rule-follower, would choose science over religion, lonely, slightly judgmental, insomnic, has a grown daughter, full of pain and fear and doubt - but covers it well.
  • Nat – (male identifying, plays 40s-50s) Even in the desperate attempt to survive and the suffocating atmosphere of the house, Nat retains a certain charisma and sex appeal. A coward at times and an adventurer at other times, has an "ignorance is bliss" philosophy, lives on the verge of personal collapse.
  • Julia – (female identifying, plays early 20s) Free-spirited, rule-breaker, smoker, energetic, outgoing, a force to be reckoned with, either wise beyone her years or an amazing swindler. In order to survive, she will do anything: lie, kill, or deceive. Unknowingly or not, she drives a wedge between Nat and Diane.
  • Tierney – (male identifying, plays 50s) A neighboring farmer. Blue-collar type, threatening appearance, lonely, tries to convince Diane to leave with him. One excellent scene of dialogue.

From the story that inspired the classic Hitchcock film, this bold adaptation is a gripping, unsettling, and moving look at human relationships in the face of societal collapse. In an isolated house, strangers Diane and Nat take shelter from relentless masses of attacking birds. They find relative sanctuary but not comfort or peace: there is no electricity, little food, and a nearby neighbor may still be alive and watching them. Another refugee, the younger Julia, arrives with some news of the outside world, but her presence also brings discord. Their survival becomes even more doubtful when paranoia takes hold of the makeshift fortress - an internal threat to match that of the birds outside. (From the Daphne du Maurier story of the same name.)

"Deliciously chilling...spring-loaded with tension...claustrophobic, questioning, frightening; and with a twist." ‐ Irish Independent

"[McPherson] keeps us on the edge of our seat." ‐ The Irish Times

"A powerful piece of theatre and a reminder to me of just how important that story has become... truly frightening... a night in the theatre that should not be missed." ‐ Tippi Hedren, star of the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds

Production Kickoff, auditions, and performances take place at:
Curtain Players Theatre
5691 Harlem Road, Galena, OH 43021

Curtain Players offers an information session for each of its productions as a help for actors seeking roles, but attendance is not required to audition. The event is an opportunity for actors to become acquainted with the community theatre organization, to discuss the play with the director, and to ask questions about the audition process, rehearsal period, and production plans. Those interested in working behind the scenes are also invited to attend.

Curtain Players conducts open auditions for its productions. Roles are not cast in advance, and, unless specified otherwise in the role's description, are open to all without regard to race or ethnicity. Casting decisions are made by the director and a casting committee comprised of (at minimum) a member of the theatre board, a general member of the organization, and individuals of the director's choosing.
