- Olivia – A wealthy countess, mourning the recent deaths of her father and brother. During a seven year mourning period, Olivia has sworn to not marry or hear any proposals. Unless it's from that new page of the Duke's…
- Orsino – The Duke of Illyria, the sort to be in love with love. Taken with music and romance, he sends his servants to woo Olivia in his stead.
- Viola – Our heroine. A young noblewoman who has survived a shipwreck and washed up on the shores of Illyria. Disguising herself as a boy named Cesario, Viola enters Orsino’s service and falls in love with him. Now if only she were attracting his attention instead of Olivia's…
- Sebastian – Viola's twin brother, who arrives in Illyria three months after his sister. His planned day of sightseeing goes off the rails when strangers keep insisting they know him.
- Malvolio – Olivia's steward, in charge of her household. A kind of puritan, he disdains all merrymaking and drunkenness, especially from Sir Toby. He's so full of himself he might just be easily led if he could be convinced a certain countess loves him.
- Sir Toby Belch – Olivia's drunken uncle who leeches off of Sir Andrew and conspires to make a fool of Malvolio. Fond of cakes and ale and pickled herrings; very much in the vein of Falstaff from the Henry IV plays.
- Sir Andrew Aguecheeck – A rich idiot, and Sir Toby's unwitting meal ticket. Sir Toby has convinced him that he has a shot with Olivia, and poor rich Sir Andrew's just dumb enough to believe it and stick around.
- Maria – Olivia's lady in waiting and trusted confidant. The brains behind the plot to humiliate Malvolio.
- Feste – Olivia's fool, the only person capable of cheering her up in her mourning. Known to Orsino as well, he's never without a song. Goes along with the prank on Malvolio up to a point.
- Fabian – A compatriot in the plot against Malvolio. We never really find out what his deal is aside from having run afoul of Malvolio in the past.
- Antonio – A seafaring man who rescued Sebastian and smittenly followed him to Illyria, even though his past as a purported pirate makes him a wanted man.
- Curio and Valentine – Orsino's servants
- Officers – Men of Illyria who arrest Antonio when he breaks up the farcical duel between "Cesario" and Sir Andrew.
- Priest – Officiates the wedding of Olivia… but who exactly did he marry to her?
Countess Olivia refuses the company of men, or to see any entertainment while she is in mourning for her father and brother. The message seems not to have reached Duke Orsino of Illyria, who is determined to win Olivia's hand. While Olivia's household makes merry and plots pranks against the puritanical steward Malvolio, Orsino sends his new page Cesario to woo Olivia. The twist? Olivia immediately falls for Cesario. The second twist? Cesario is actually a young woman named Viola, recently separated from her twin brother Sebastian in a shipwreck. The third twist? Sebastian is alive and recently arrived in Illyria! Misconceptions! Mistaken identities! Yellow stockings! Madness is afoot in this classic comedy with a holiday twist.

Where
Production Kickoff, auditions, and performances take place at:
Curtain Players Theatre
5691 Harlem Road, Galena, OH 43021
Curtain Players offers an information session for each of its productions as a help for actors seeking roles, but attendance is not required to audition. The event is an opportunity for actors to become acquainted with the community theatre organization, to discuss the play with the director, and to ask questions about the audition process, rehearsal period, and production plans. Those interested in working behind the scenes are also invited to attend.
Curtain Players conducts open auditions for its productions.
Roles are not cast in advance, and, unless specified otherwise in the role's description, are open to all without regard to race or ethnicity.
Casting decisions are made by the director and a casting committee comprised of (at minimum) a member of the theatre board, a general member of the organization, and individuals of the director's choosing.
Auditions will consist of two contrasting monologues from an early modern work (either from Shakespeare or one of his contemporaries), as well as cold readings from the script.
Monologues should not last more than two minutes combined, and at least one should be verse.
We are looking for actors with musical talent (especially if they play an instrument), so in lieu of one of their monologues, they may perform 16 bars of a song instead.
The whole audition should not exceed two minutes so we have time for cold reads.
Requests for an early audition for Twelfth Night must be made no later than August 16, 2026.
Questions related to the audition process may be directed to production@curtainplayers.org.
My intention is to hold rehearsal four to five times a week, depending on cast availability. Rehearsals will go for three hours, with a hard stop at 9:30 for evening rehearsals. I work early every weekday (and live fairly far from the theater), so I want to be especially conscious of respecting people's time.
